  • I've been watching shows about hoarders and pickers again, and as usual it's made me want to get rid of everything.  There was a show about a hoarding couple who had something wrong with their septic system and sewage was running right through their house.  They had so much stuff that no one could reach the plumbing.  But they didn't care.  And they didn't especially want to get rid of anything.

Then there's the pickers, people who go around buying things from people who have been accumulating things forever.  These people have houses, barns, sheds and yards full of stuff.  Sometimes they'll sell a few things, but often they can't stand to part with anything.  WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH PEOPLE?  As my grandmother used to say, "There's no pocket in your shroud."  It all gets left behind for the family to deal with.

So - I'm going through the house yet again, getting rid of things we don't need.  Remember the bread box I was so happy to find a while back?  We don't eat much bread now so it's going.  I keep a loaf of bread in the freezer for the rare times I want a piece of toast or a sandwich.  Sam doesn't eat any bread.  So why keep the bread box?

I really need to stop watching shows about hoarders and pickers or we won't have anything left in the house.  Which, actually, is my ultimate goal.

  • Remembering the state of my parents' home when they went into sheltered housing, I've adopted a "toss it" outlook. HOWEVER,

Marsha Fridel refuses to part with any piece of wood, old but not valuable books, loose-leaf binders, army uniforms from the '5o's and '60's...the list is endless. "The boys might want it" is his motto. The "boys" reject it all. What should be a guest bedroom has turned into a storage room. Help!
